Back to School: Tips for a Smooth Transition

As the new school year approaches, BVUK Blackburn offers advice to help children and families prepare for a smooth return to education.

The summer holidays are drawing to a close, and for many families, thoughts are turning to the new school year. Getting back into a routine can be a challenge after a long break, but with some preparation, you can help make the transition easier for your children. Encourage your children to gradually adjust their sleep schedule in the days leading up to school. Re-establishing regular bedtimes and wake-up times can make a significant difference to their energy levels and concentration. You might also want to reintroduce some structured activities to help them get used to a learning environment again. Organisation is key for a successful return to school. Help your children prepare their school bags, check uniform requirements, and ensure they have all the necessary stationery and equipment. Involving them in these preparations can foster a sense of responsibility and excitement for the new term. Remember that emotional support is just as important as practical preparations. Talk to your children about their feelings regarding going back to school, whether they are excited, anxious, or a mixture of both. Reassure them that it's normal to have these feelings and encourage them to look forward to seeing their friends and learning new things. If you have any concerns about your child's return to school, or need information about local support services, please contact the BVUK Blackburn contact page for assistance.
